Arrival in Tromsø — Gateway to the Arctic

    Morning

    Arrival at Tromsø Airport

Land at Tromsø Langnes Airport, 350 km north of the Arctic Circle. In January, the sun doesn't rise — it's the polar night (mørketid). Bus transfer (15 min) or taxi to the city centre. Check into your hotel.

    Afternoon

    Explore Tromsø city centre

Stroll through Tromsø's historic centre, nicknamed the 'Paris of the North'. Colourful wooden houses, the world's northernmost wooden cathedral (1861). Stop at Mack Brewery, the world's northernmost brewery, for a tasting of Arctic craft beers.

    Evening

    Arctic dinner at Fiskekompaniet

First Arctic dinner at Fiskekompaniet, a seafood restaurant in a former harbour warehouse. Specialities: skrei (Arctic cod in season in January), king crab, stockfish and cod cream. Views of the harbour and the illuminated Tromsø Bridge.

  2. Day 2

Polar museum & first aurora chase

    Morning

Visit Polaria, Tromsø's Arctic centre. Aquarium with Arctic bearded seals, panoramic cinema on the northern lights and polar wildlife. Interactive exhibition on climate change and the Arctic ecosystem.

    Afternoon

Fjellheisen cable car — panoramic view

Take the cable car to the top of Storsteinen (421 m) for a 360° view of Tromsø, the fjords, snow-covered mountains and surrounding islands. In January, the polar twilight blue light creates an otherworldly atmosphere. Ideal viewpoint for photographing the city.

    Evening

    Northern lights chase by minibus

First northern lights chase (6-7h) by minibus with a professional photographer guide. The guide follows real-time weather forecasts and drives up to 200 km from Tromsø to find clear skies. Hot chocolate and warm meal included around a campfire in the snow.

  3. Day 3

    Dog sledding & Arctic Cathedral

    Morning

    Dog sledding — Arctic adventure

Dog sledding excursion (3h) through the snowy landscapes of the Tromsø valley. Drive your own team of 4-6 Alaskan huskies through birch forests and frozen lakes. Technical briefing, then a silent run through the pristine white Arctic.

    Afternoon

    Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen)

Visit the Arctic Cathedral, a 1965 architectural masterpiece inspired by icebergs and the northern lights. Its white concrete triangle façade evokes a glacier. The stained-glass window is Europe's largest (140 m²). Classical music concerts on some winter evenings.

    Evening

Dinner at Mathallen Tromsø & local beers

Dinner at Mathallen (Tromsø's food hall) gathering Nordic street food stands, wine bar and craft brewery. Try smoked reindeer, king crab and brunost (Norwegian sweet brown cheese). Warm and convivial atmosphere.

  4. Day 4

    Whale safari in the fjords

    Morning

Whale safari — orcas & humpback whales

Fast boat excursion (5-6h) through the fjords around Tromsø to spot orcas and humpback whales following herring shoals in winter. January is the peak of the season. Watch from the boat deck with a naturalist guide.

    Afternoon

    Sami culture & reindeer

    Morning

Visit a Sami camp & reindeer

    Afternoon

    Tromsø Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden

Visit the world's northernmost botanical garden (free). In January, under snow, the garden offers a landscape of natural sculptures and dormant Arctic plants. Peaceful walk with views of surrounding mountains in the blue light.

    Evening

    Afternoon

    Arctic beaches & coastal hike

Coastal hike (2h) along Sommarøy's white sand beaches — yes, white sand under northern lights and snow. The contrast between turquoise water (frozen in places) and snow-capped mountains is surreal. Lofoten-worthy scenery without the crowds.

    Evening
