Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Kotor

    Morning

    Arrival & check-in

Land at Tivat Airport (closest to Kotor, 8 km) or Podgorica (100 km). Reach Kotor by taxi or shuttle and check into the old town or its immediate surroundings.

    Afternoon

    Kotor Old Town

Explore Kotor's fortified old town, a UNESCO site. Wander through the labyrinth of medieval lanes, discover St. Tryphon's Cathedral (12th century), hidden squares, and Venetian palaces. The town is tiny but every corner holds a surprise.

    Evening

    Seafood dinner on the harbor

Settle onto a terrace facing the Bay of Kotor for a dinner of fresh fish and seafood. Montenegrin cuisine blends Venetian, Ottoman, and Slavic influences — try grilled octopus, black risotto, and Vranac, the local red grape.

  2. Day 2

    Bay of Kotor

    Morning

    San Giovanni Fortress climb

Climb the 1,350 steps to San Giovanni Fortress (280m altitude) for the most spectacular panorama of the Bay of Kotor. The plunging view over the fjord, red rooftops of the old town, and surrounding mountains is breathtaking.

    Afternoon

Perast & Our Lady of the Rocks

Head to Perast (15 min), a baroque village frozen in time with its ruined Venetian palaces. Take a water taxi (5 min) to the artificial islet of Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela), built stone by stone by sailors since the 15th century, topped with a church housing 68 paintings by Tripo Kokolja.

    Evening

    Sunset from the Lovćen road

Take the serpentine road climbing from Kotor toward Mount Lovćen — 25 hairpin bends with an ever more impressive view of the bay. Stop at viewpoints to watch the sunset over Europe's southernmost fjord.

  3. Day 3

    Budva & the Riviera

    Morning

    Budva Old Town

Coastal drive to Budva (25 min from Kotor). Explore the fortified citadel on its peninsula: Venetian ramparts, narrow lanes, tiny churches, and terraces overlooking Sveti Nikola island. Budva is one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic (2,500 years).

    Afternoon

Mogren Beach & Sveti Stefan viewpoint

Swim at Mogren Beach, accessible via a coastal path from the old town (10 min). Two fine sand coves framed by cliffs and linked by a natural tunnel. Continue by car (15 min) to the viewpoint over Sveti Stefan, Montenegro's most photographed island-hotel.

    Evening

Dinner & stroll on the Riviera

Dine at one of Budva's waterfront restaurants, then stroll along the coastal promenade (Slovenska Plaža) at sunset. The Montenegrin summer vibe is relaxed and festive.

  4. Day 4

    Lake Skadar

    Morning

    Drive to Lake Skadar

Leave the coast for the interior (1h30 from Budva). The road crosses karst mountain landscapes before revealing Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans (shared between Montenegro and Albania). Stop at the Pavlova Strana viewpoint for the iconic view of the Crnojevića river bend.

    Afternoon

    Boat tour on the lake

Board a boat tour on Lake Skadar from Virpazar. Cruise among giant water lilies, spot Dalmatian pelicans (rare species), herons, and cormorants. Visit an isolated monastery on an islet and swim in the lake's crystal-clear waters.

    Evening

    Dinner in Virpazar village

Dine lakeside in the charming village of Virpazar. Try the lake carp, a local specialty, prepared grilled or stewed, accompanied by garden vegetables and local Crmničko wine.

  5. Day 5

    Road to Durmitor

    Morning

    Drive to Žabljak

Scenic 3h drive through Montenegro's mountainous heart. Cross the Morača gorges and northern alpine landscapes. The road is spectacular — deep forests, turquoise rivers, and isolated villages.

    Afternoon

    Tara River Canyon

Discover the Tara River Canyon, the deepest in Europe and 2nd in the world after the Grand Canyon (1,300m deep). The Tara River, with its limpid blue-green water, is nicknamed 'the tear of Europe'. Option for white-water rafting (class III-IV) or simply admiring from viewpoints.

    Evening

    Mountain dinner in Žabljak

Savor Montenegrin mountain cuisine at a konoba (tavern) in Žabljak. Specialties: kačamak (polenta with melted cheese), jagnjetina ispod sača (lamb cooked under a bell), and priganice (honey donuts). Warm atmosphere after an adventurous day.

  6. Day 6

    Durmitor National Park

    Morning

    Black Lake hike

Hike around Black Lake (Crno Jezero), the jewel of Durmitor Park. This glacial lake with its deep blue-black color is nestled at the foot of limestone cliffs at 1,416m altitude. The lake loop (3.5 km, 1h30) is easy and passes through centuries-old pine forest.

    Afternoon

    Đurđevića Tara Bridge & panoramas

Visit the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, a 1940 engineering masterpiece spanning the canyon at 172m height with its 5 elegant arches. Option for a zipline across the canyon (350m long) for thrill-seekers. Continue to other viewpoints over the Durmitor mountains.

    Evening

    Last mountain evening

Enjoy a final evening in Durmitor's pure mountain air. Dinner at an etala (converted shepherd's hut) around the fire, with mountain cheese, dried meat, and rakija (plum brandy). The starry sky at 1,450m is spectacular far from any light pollution.

  7. Day 7

    Coastal return & departure

    Morning

    Drive back to the coast

Drive back to the coast (2h30 to Tivat). The journey offers new panoramas over Montenegro's mountains and valleys. Optional stop at Ostrog, a spectacular Orthodox monastery built into a vertical cliff face.

    Afternoon

Free time in Tivat / Porto Montenegro

Spend your last hours at Porto Montenegro, a luxury marina converted from a former Yugoslav naval shipyard. Stroll among the yachts, do your last shopping, or enjoy a final terrace coffee facing the bay.

    Evening

    Airport transfer & departure

Head to Tivat Airport (5 min from Porto Montenegro) for your return flight. One last look at the Bay of Kotor from the airplane window — one of the most beautiful aerial approaches in the Mediterranean.
