Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Valletta

    Morning

    Arrival & Upper Barrakka Gardens

Arrive at Malta International Airport (MLA). Transfer to Valletta by express bus X4 (~30 min, €2) or taxi (~€20). Check into your hotel in the fortified city. First stop: Upper Barrakka Gardens, hanging gardens atop the St Peter & St Paul bastions, offering a stunning panorama over the Grand Harbour, Three Cities, and Fort Ricasoli. At noon, witness the cannon firing of the Saluting Battery (tradition since 1566).

    Afternoon

    Republic Street & St. John's Co-Cathedral

Walk Republic Street, Valletta's main artery cutting through the fortified city end to end. Visit St John's Co-Cathedral (1577), a masterpiece of European Baroque art: the gold-covered interior is a visual shock with its vaults painted by Mattia Preti and especially Caravaggio's 'The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist', his largest painting and the only one he signed. The marble floor is composed of 375 tombstones of Knights of the Order.

    Evening

    Dinner at the Waterfront

Head down to Valletta Waterfront, the former 18th-century Knights of Malta warehouses beautifully converted into restaurants and bars. Terraces line the Grand Harbour with views of yachts and the illuminated Three Cities across. Try your first pastizz (ricotta or pea pastry, ~€0.50 each), lampuka (mahi-mahi, September-October specialty), or ftira (Maltese pizza on traditional bread).

  2. Day 2

    Valletta Heritage

    Morning

Fort St. Elmo & Grand Master's Palace

Start at Fort St Elmo, at the tip of the Valletta peninsula, which heroically resisted the Ottoman siege of 1565. The National War Museum traces Malta's military history from the Knights of St John to WWII (Malta received the George Cross in 1942). Continue to the Grandmaster's Palace (Misraħ San Ġorġ), official residence of the Grand Masters for 230 years: the Armoury holds over 5,000 pieces and the Council Chamber features historic frescoes.

    Afternoon

    Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum

The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is the only known prehistoric underground temple in the world. Carved into limestone between 4000 and 2500 BC, this three-level labyrinth served as a necropolis and worship site. Chambers decorated with red ochre spirals, the 'Holy of Holies' room, and the extraordinary acoustics of the Oracle Room (male voices resonate supernaturally) make this a unique experience. Only 80 visitors per day — BOOK several weeks in advance.

    Evening

    Strait Street & rooftop bar

Explore Strait Street (Triq id-Dejqa), nicknamed 'The Gut' — the former sailors' and cabaret street, now converted into a trendy cultural artery with wine bars, jazz clubs, and galleries. The nightlife atmosphere recalls the 1940s-50s buzz when the Royal Navy called port. End with a cocktail on a rooftop with views of the illuminated Grand Harbour.

  3. Day 3

    The Three Cities

    Morning

Birgu (Vittoriosa) & Fort St. Angelo

Cross the Grand Harbour by dgħajsa (traditional Maltese water taxi, ~€2) or water taxi from Valletta Waterfront to Birgu (Vittoriosa), the Knights' first capital in Malta. Explore the medieval lanes of the Collachio (Knights' residential quarter), Fort St Angelo (Order's HQ during the Great Siege of 1565), the Inquisitor's Palace, and the Maritime Museum. The atmosphere is authentically Maltese, far from Valletta's tourism.

    Afternoon

    Senglea & Cospicua bastions

Continue to Senglea (Isla), the smallest of the Three Cities. Gardjola Gardens at the tip of the peninsula offer the iconic view of the Grand Harbour and Valletta — the sculpted guardhouse (vedette) with its symbolic eyes and ears of vigilance is Malta's postcard shot. Cross to Cospicua (Bormla) and walk along its impressive Margherita and Cottonera bastions, the Knights' largest fortifications (4.5 km of walls).

    Evening

    Dinner at Birgu Waterfront

Return to Birgu for a waterside dinner on the Birgu Waterfront. The atmosphere is noticeably more relaxed and cheaper than Valletta, with Grand Harbour yachts as backdrop and the illuminated Fort St Angelo walls. It's the perfect spot to try fenek (rabbit stew, Malta's national dish) or grilled catch of the day.

  4. Day 4

    Mdina & Rabat

    Morning

    Mdina — the Silent City

Bus from Valletta to Mdina (~30 min, bus 51 or 52). Mdina, Malta's former capital, is nicknamed 'The Silent City': a fortified town perched on a hill with only ~300 residents. Enter through the Main Gate (1724) and lose yourself in medieval and Baroque lanes. Visit St Paul's Cathedral (sumptuous interior, tombstone floor), Palazzo Falson (best-preserved medieval noble house), and the Natural History Museum in Palazzo Vilhena.

    Afternoon

Rabat — Catacombs & Roman remains

Just outside Mdina's walls, Rabat holds underground treasures. St Paul's Catacombs (3rd-4th century) are a labyrinth of tunnels and burial chambers carved into limestone, among the most important in the Mediterranean. The Domus Romana displays exceptionally well-preserved Roman mosaics from a 1st-century BC villa. The Wignacourt Museum (beneath St Paul's Church) reveals more underground galleries and a sacred art collection.

    Evening

    Dinner at Fontanella Tea Garden

Return to Mdina for dinner at Fontanella Tea Garden, perched on the medieval city's ramparts. This legendary terrace offers a panoramic view across the entire island — from terraced fields to the Mosta dome and the sea beyond. At sunset, the spectacle is unforgettable. Order the homemade chocolate cake, house specialty and Malta's best dessert according to locals.

  5. Day 5

    Megalithic Temples & South

    Morning

    Ħaġar Qim & Mnajdra temples

The megalithic temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra (UNESCO), dating from around 3600 BC, are older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Perched on Malta's southern cliffs facing the islet of Filfla, these colossal stone complexes testify to a vanished island civilization. Mnajdra's astronomical alignments (equinoxes and solstices) prove remarkable sophistication. A multimedia interpretation center precedes the visit.

    Afternoon

    Blue Grotto & Marsaxlokk

Head to the Blue Grotto (Taħt il-Ħnejja), a series of six sea caves with phosphorescent water of an unreal blue. Fisherman's boats take you inside (~30 min, departing from Wied iż-Żurrieq). Continue to Marsaxlokk, Malta's most photogenic fishing village: the harbor is filled with luzzu, traditional boats with Eyes of Osiris painted on the prow, believed to protect fishermen. On Sunday mornings, the fish market fills the quay.

    Evening

    Seafood dinner in Marsaxlokk

Stay in Marsaxlokk for an ultra-fresh seafood dinner. The village is Malta's main fishing port — catch of the day goes straight from boats to your table. In September-October, it's lampuka (mahi-mahi) season, Malta's king fish: grilled whole or in a pie (lampuki pie). Pair with Ġellewża, the rare Maltese red wine with a unique island character.

  6. Day 6

    Gozo Island

    Morning

    Ferry & Victoria Citadel

Ferry from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr (Gozo) — 25 min, departures are frequent (every 45 min). Head up to Victoria (Rabat), Gozo's capital, and visit the Citadella, a medieval fortress perched atop the hill with 360° views over the entire island and sea. The Cathedral of the Assumption (1711) has an extraordinary trompe-l'œil painted ceiling simulating a dome (the budget didn't allow building a real one). The Citadella museums trace Gozo's history.

    Afternoon

    Ramla Bay & Calypso Cave

Head to northern Gozo. Ramla Bay is the most beautiful beach in the Maltese archipelago: unique red-orange sand, shallow turquoise waters, pristine natural setting between two hills. From the parking, climb to the Calypso Cave viewpoint (Tal-Mixta Cave), where Homer placed the nymph's grotto that held Odysseus for 7 years. The plunging view over Ramla Bay from the cave is spectacular. Afternoon swimming in warm waters (26°C in September).

    Evening

    Dinner at Xlendi Bay

Head down to Xlendi Bay, a small bay nestled between cliffs in southwest Gozo. This miniature fishing village retains its authentic charm with a handful of waterside restaurants. The limestone cliffs frame the bay like a natural amphitheater. In the evening, lights reflect in the calm bay waters — one of the most romantic spots in the archipelago.

  7. Day 7

    Gozo & Comino

    Morning

    Ġgantija Temples & Ta' Pinu

Start with the Ġgantija Temples (UNESCO) in Xagħra, the world's oldest freestanding structures (~3600 BC) — 1,000 years older than the pyramids. The two megalithic temples, built with coral limestone blocks weighing up to 50 tons, are impressive in size and preservation. Continue to Ta' Pinu Basilica, Malta's national shrine nestled in the Gozitan countryside, a pilgrimage site since a peasant woman heard the Virgin's voice there in 1883.

    Afternoon

    Comino Blue Lagoon

Board from Mġarr (Gozo) or Ċirkewwa (Malta) to Comino, a tiny uninhabited island (3.5 km²) between Malta and Gozo. The Blue Lagoon is THE most spectacular natural site in the archipelago: translucent turquoise water above white sand bottom, framed by limestone rocks of Comino and the islet of Cominotto. Swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing on the rocks. The water is so clear that boats appear to float in mid-air.

    Evening

    Dinner in Sliema

Return to Malta by ferry. End the evening in Sliema, Malta's lively seaside resort with its long waterfront promenade (The Strand). Restaurants and bars line the seafront with views of illuminated Valletta across Marsamxett Harbour. The atmosphere is more modern and cosmopolitan than the old city.

  8. Day 8

    Departure

    Morning

    Final swim

Enjoy a last morning swim before departure. Two options: Għajn Tuffieħa Bay (Golden Bay) in the northwest, a sandy beach accessed by 200 rock-carved steps with spectacular views; or St Peter's Pool near Marsaxlokk, a natural pool carved into limestone cliffs with crystal-clear water and natural diving platforms. Two very different experiences to end the trip in style.

    Afternoon

    Transfer & departure

Transfer to Malta International Airport (MLA). From Valletta: bus X4 (~30 min, €2) or taxi (~€20). From Sliema: bus X2 (~25 min). The airport is small and efficient — arrive 2h before intra-European flights.

    Evening

    Departure

Return flight. Malta, this small 316 km² archipelago in the heart of the Mediterranean, packs 7,000 years of history — from megalithic temples to the Knights, Roman catacombs to Caravaggio. Safe travels!
