Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 Arrival in Reykjavik
Morning Arrivée à Keflavík & prise du 4x4
Land at Keflavík International Airport (KEF), 45 min southwest of Reykjavik. Pick up your 4x4 rental at the airport counter - essential for Iceland's roads (F-roads, winter, gravel). The FlyBus goes to Reykjavik if you take the car in town (~€25, 45 min). Get an Icelandic SIM at the airport, fill up and grab provisions at Bonus or Krónan (cheaper than Reykjavik supermarkets). Drive towards Þingvellir to begin the Golden Circle.
Afternoon Cercle d'Or : Þingvellir, Geysir & Gullfoss
Dive into the Golden Circle, Iceland's iconic tourist loop. Start at Þingvellir (UNESCO) - Iceland's most important historical and geological site, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates visibly drift apart and where the Althing (the world's oldest parliament) was founded in 930. Continue to the Strokkur geyser, which erupts 20-30 meters every 5-8 minutes, then Gullfoss, the 'Golden Falls', whose two cascades of 11 and 21 meters plunge into a 70-meter canyon.
Evening Secret Lagoon
Taste Icelandic cuisine: lamb soup, fresh catch, or the adventurous fermented shark (hákarl). The bar scene on Laugavegur is lively.
Day 2 Golden Circle
Morning Seljalandsfoss & Skógafoss
Drive the Golden Circle starting with Þingvellir National Park (UNESCO). Walk between the tectonic plates - the only place on Earth to do this on dry land.
Afternoon Plage noire de Reynisfjara
Continue to Geysir (Strokkur erupts every 5-8 min) then Gullfoss, the "Golden Waterfall" cascading into a dramatic canyon.
Evening Vík & canyon de Fjaðrárgljúfur
Secret Lagoon at Flúðir (oldest hot spring pool) or drive to accommodation near Selfoss/Vik. In winter, watch for the Northern Lights.
Day 3 South Coast - Waterfalls & Black Beach
Morning Randonnée glaciaire au Skaftafell
Drive the south coast to Seljalandsfoss (walk behind the waterfall!) and Skógafoss (climb 527 steps for the view). Two iconic waterfalls within 30 km.
Afternoon Jökulsárlón - lagon glaciaire
Continue to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach: basalt columns, roaring Atlantic waves, and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks.
Evening Diamond Beach
Cross the road to Diamond Beach (Breiðamerkursandur) where icebergs from the lagoon wash up on black volcanic sand, glittering like giant diamonds in the late evening light.
Day 4 Glacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach
Morning Höfn & langoustine islandaise
Drive to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs calve from the glacier and float in an ethereal blue lagoon toward the sea.
Afternoon Route des fjords de l'Est
Drive Route 1 through the East Fjords, Iceland's wildest and least touristic stretch: tiny harbor villages with painted houses ring fjord after fjord under steep mountains.
Evening Egilsstaðir & forêt de Hallormsstaðaskógur
Reach Egilsstaðir, the Eastfjords' largest town (2,300 inhabitants), close to Hallormsstaðaskógur, Iceland's largest forest, and Lake Lagarfljót and its legendary serpent.
Day 5 East Fjords
Morning Dettifoss - cascade la plus puissante d'Europe
Detour onto Route 864 to Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall: 193 cubic meters per second crashes 44 meters into a basalt canyon, the roar audible for kilometers.
Afternoon Lac Mývatn & pseudo-cratères
Explore Lake Mývatn, an active volcanic and birding hotspot: the Skútustaðir pseudo-craters, the Dimmuborgir lava labyrinth, and the steaming sulfur fields of Hverir.
Evening Mývatn Nature Baths
Soak in the Mývatn Nature Baths, a milky-blue alternative to the Blue Lagoon perched above the lake at 36-40C, with natural steam baths carved into volcanic rock and no crowds.
Day 6 Lake Mývatn & Volcanic Wonders
Morning Húsavík - observation de baleines
Drive to Húsavík, Europe's whale-watching capital: a 3-hour boat trip in Skjálfandi Bay yields humpbacks (90% odds in summer), white-beaked dolphins and even fin whales.
Afternoon Akureyri - capitale du Nord
Explore Námafjall (Hverir): bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, sulfurous vents in a Mars-like landscape.
Evening Goðafoss & route vers l'Ouest
Relax at Mývatn Nature Baths, the northern Blue Lagoon but less crowded. Milky blue geothermal water with mountain views.
Day 7 Akureyri & the North
Morning Kirkjufell & Grundarfjörður
Visit Goðafoss, the 'Waterfall of the Gods' where Viking idols were thrown when Iceland converted to Christianity in 1000 AD.
Afternoon Plage de Djúpalónssandur & falaises d'Arnarstapi
Explore Akureyri: northernmost botanical garden in the world, iconic church, whale watching from Húsavík (whale capital of Europe).
Evening Glacier Snæfellsjökull
Stay in Akureyri. Walk along the fjord and enjoy the vibrant culture scene of this small northern city.
Day 8 Snæfellsnes Peninsula & Return
Morning Reykjavik - Hallgrímskirkja & centre-ville
Drive to Snæfellsnes, 'Iceland in miniature.' Visit Kirkjufell (most photographed mountain) and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall.
Afternoon Blue Lagoon
Explore Snæfellsjökull volcano (Jules Verne's entrance to the Center of the Earth). Djúpalónssandur black beach, Lóndrangar basalt cliffs.
Evening Transfert vers Keflavík & vol retour
Return your 4x4 at Keflavík Airport (KEF). The Blue Lagoon is ideally placed between Reykjavik and the airport - count 20 min from the spa, 50 min from central Reykjavik via the Reykjanesbraut. If you no longer have the car, the FlyBus shuttles Reykjavik to KEF every 30-60 min (~€25, 45 min). Allow 2h30 before a Schengen flight, 3h non-Schengen (notably USA with pre-clearance). Bless bless Ísland.
