Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 Dubrovnik — The Gates of King's Landing
Morning Arrivée à Dubrovnik & installation
Land at Dubrovnik airport and head to the old town (shuttle or taxi, ~30 min). Dubrovnik is THE iconic Game of Thrones location: its walls, alleys and palaces embodied King's Landing for 8 seasons. Check into your accommodation, ideally in or near the old town to maximize walking access to filming locations.
Afternoon Tour des remparts — La muraille de King's Landing
Walk the Dubrovnik city walls (1,940 meters), the series' most iconic backdrop. This is where Tyrion led the defense during the Battle of Blackwater (season 2), where Cersei surveys the city from above, and where Joffrey struts. From the ramparts, you'll recognize Minčeta Tower (the House of the Undying in Qarth), Fort Bokar (where Tyrion and Varys conspire) and panoramic views of the harbor used in countless scenes.
Evening Stradun & Pile Gate — Flânerie dans les rues de King's Landing
Stroll along the Stradun (the old town's main street) and around Pile Gate at sunset. The Stradun was used for many King's Landing crowd scenes. Pile Gate and its surroundings serve as the backdrop for capital entry scenes. Enjoy the golden light for photographing the alleys and the Great Onofrio Fountain (visible in several episodes). Dine at an old town restaurant terrace.
Day 2 Dubrovnik — The Red Keep & Secrets of the Capital
Morning Fort Lovrijenac — Le Donjon Rouge
Visit Fort Lovrijenac (St. Lawrence), perched on a 37-meter rock facing the sea. This impressive fortress served as the main set for the Red Keep, the royal palace of the Baratheons then the Lannisters. This is where the outdoor iron throne scenes take place, the fight between the Mountain and the Red Viper (season 4), and Joffrey's royal receptions. The views over the sea and ramparts are spectacular.
Afternoon Escalier des Jésuites & Rue Saint-Dominique — La Marche de la Honte de Cersei
Descend the famous Jesuit Staircase (Jezuitske stube), the exact location of Cersei's Walk of Shame (season 5, episode 10). The staircase leads from St. Ignatius Church to Gundulić Square. Continue to St. Dominic Street (Ulica od Domina), used for King's Landing market scenes, and the Rector's Palace, which served as the interior of Qarth's palace (season 2). Also visit the Cathedral of the Assumption, whose interior inspired several Great Sept of Baelor sets.
Evening Île de Lokrum — Les Jardins de Qarth
Take the ferry to Lokrum Island (10 minutes from the old port). This paradise island served as the set for the gardens of Qarth (season 2) where Daenerys searches for her stolen dragons. The Benedictine monastery's botanical garden is the exact filming location. Bonus: you can sit on a replica Iron Throne installed in the monastery! Also enjoy swimming in the crystal-clear waters (the 'Dead Sea', a natural saltwater lake, is a must).
Day 3 Dubrovnik — Blackwater Bay & Surroundings
Morning Plage de Banje & Fort Revelin — La Baie de la Néra
Start at Banje Beach, just outside Ploče Gate. This beach and surrounding sea area served as the backdrop for Blackwater Bay. This is where Stannis's ships approach King's Landing (season 2) and where Tyrion launches the wildfire. Fort Revelin (now a nightclub) was used for interior fortress scenes. Enjoy a morning swim with views of the city walls.
Afternoon Arboretum de Trsteno — Les Jardins du Donjon Rouge
Take the coastal road to Trsteno (20 km north, ~30 min by car or bus #12). The Trsteno Arboretum, Croatia's oldest (founded 1502), served as the Red Keep gardens where Olenna Tyrell, Sansa, Cersei, Margaery and Varys have their most memorable conversations. The monumental 500-year-old plane trees, the Neptune Fountain and the terrace overlooking the Adriatic are instantly recognizable. It's a magical place, far less crowded than Dubrovnik.
Evening Bar Mala Buža — Coucher de soleil sur la mer de Westeros
Back in Dubrovnik, end the day at the legendary Buža bar (or Mala Buža), an open-air bar literally carved into the cliffs beneath the ramparts. Accessed through a hole in the wall (look for the 'Cold Drinks' sign in an alley), this unlikely bar offers vertiginous views of the Adriatic and rocks below. While not directly used in the series, this is where actors and crew gathered after filming days. The sunset here is unforgettable.
Day 4 Road to Split — Klis Fortress & Žrnovnica
Morning Route Dubrovnik → Split (via la côte dalmate)
Leave Dubrovnik heading north along the Dalmatian coast to Split (~300 km, ~4h drive). The coastal road (D8/E65) is one of Europe's most beautiful, following the Adriatic with spectacular island views. You'll briefly cross Bosnia-Herzegovina at Neum (bring passport/ID). Stop at Makarska or Omiš for coffee and views of the Biokovo massif.
Afternoon Forteresse de Klis — La Cité de Meereen
Stop at Klis Fortress, only 15 km northeast of Split. This medieval fortress perched at 385 meters served as the exterior set for the city of Meereen, the slave city freed by Daenerys (seasons 4-6). The main entrance is exactly where Daenerys nails the slave masters to posts. The 360° views over Split, the islands and the hinterland are breathtaking. The fortress itself has 2,000 years of real history.
Evening Carrière de Žrnovnica — Les Arènes de Combat de Meereen
Make a detour to the small village of Žrnovnica (10 min southeast of Split). The abandoned Žrnovnica quarry was transformed into the fighting pit for Daznak's Pit scenes, where Daenerys watches gladiator fights and where Drogon makes his spectacular entrance to save her (season 5). The site is freely accessible and little-known to tourists. Then head to Split to check in and dine on the Riva (waterfront).
Day 5 Split — Diocletian's Palace & Meereen
Morning Palais de Dioclétien — Les Sous-sols de Meereen
Explore Diocletian's Palace, Split's historic heart and a UNESCO site. The palace basements (Podrumi) are Split's most important filming location: the dungeons where Daenerys imprisons her dragons Viserion and Rhaegal (seasons 4-5), and the underground areas used in many Meereen scenes. The 4th-century Roman vaulted cellars are perfectly preserved with a striking atmosphere. The Peristyle (inner courtyard) served for Daenerys's court scenes.
Afternoon Marjan Hill & Kaštelet — Vues panoramiques & tournage
Climb Marjan Hill, Split's green lung. The forest park offers shaded trails with panoramic views over the city, islands and Dalmatian coast. The Kaštelet quarter (at Marjan's western foot) was used for exterior Braavos scenes and some Meereen shots. Gripe Fortress (Tvrđava Gripe) north of the center was also a filming location. Enjoy swimming at one of Marjan's beaches (Kašjuni is the most beautiful).
Evening Soirée dans le Palais — Vie nocturne dans les murs de Dioclétien
In the evening, Diocletian's Palace transforms. Bars and restaurants nestled within the Roman walls create a unique atmosphere — you're literally dining in a 1,700-year-old palace. The Peristyle lights up and musicians sometimes play. Explore the palace alleys (Cardo and Decumanus), discover artisan shops and settle on the terrace at Republic Square (Prokurative), an elegant neo-Renaissance square. This is Split at its finest.
Day 6 Šibenik — The Iron Bank of Braavos
Morning Route Split → Šibenik & Cathédrale Saint-Jacques
Head to Šibenik (80 km north, ~1h15). Šibenik is less known to tourists but houses a major filming location: St. James Cathedral (Katedrala sv. Jakova), a UNESCO Renaissance-Gothic masterpiece. Its forecourt and stairs served as the set for the Iron Bank of Braavos (season 5), where Arya Stark arrives in the city of assassins and where Mace Tyrell negotiates with the bankers. The white stone architecture is instantly recognizable.
Afternoon Forteresse Saint-Nicolas & Forteresse Barone — Braavos fortifié
Visit St. Nicholas Fortress (Tvrđava sv. Nikole), a 16th-century Venetian bastion on an island at St. Anthony Channel's entrance, UNESCO-listed. Then climb to Barone Fortress (Tvrđava Barone), recently renovated with interactive museography and augmented reality. This fortress offers the best panoramic view of Šibenik, the cathedral, the channel and the Kornati Islands. The medieval alleys between the two fortresses also served as Braavos streets.
Evening Parc national de Krka — Cascade & détente nature
In the late afternoon, detour to Krka National Park (15 km from Šibenik), famous for its spectacular waterfalls. While not used in GOT, it's a regional must-see and the perfect complement to a cultural day. Skradinski Buk waterfall (17 falls over 800 meters) is the most impressive. Swimming at the falls has been prohibited since 2021, but wooden walkways offer beautiful views. Return to Šibenik or Split for the night.
Day 7 Return & Final Discoveries
Morning Retour vers Dubrovnik ou Split — Arrêt à Ston
Depending on your return flight (Dubrovnik or Split), take the road back. If returning to Dubrovnik, stop at Ston (1h north of Dubrovnik), nicknamed Europe's 'Great Wall of China'. Ston's walls (5.5 km) are Europe's longest and while not used in GOT, they evoke the Wall of Westeros. Ston is also Croatia's oyster capital — taste fresh oysters from the Mali Ston basin, paired with local Pošip white wine.
Afternoon Dernières visites & shopping souvenirs
Back in your departure city, use the final hours for souvenirs and missed visits. In Dubrovnik: the Franciscan pharmacy (Europe's 3rd oldest, since 1317), the Maritime Museum, or the Mount Srđ cable car (sensational panoramic view). In Split: the Pazar market (fruits, cheese, Dalmatian charcuterie), the Archaeological Museum, or the Meštrović Gallery. Buy Croatian olive oil, Hvar lavender, or Dingač wine (Croatia's finest red).
Evening Départ — Valar Morghulis
Head to the airport for your return flight. Dubrovnik airport is ~25 km from the old town (~30 min), Split airport ~25 km from the center (~30 min). While waiting for your flight, reflect on this journey: from King's Landing's ramparts to Meereen's dungeons, from Braavos streets to Daznak's Pit, you've walked the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and the Free Cities of Essos. Valar Morghulis — all men must die. But the memories of this trip are eternal.
