Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Naples & Pompeii

    Morning

    Spiaggia Grande

Land in Naples. Visit the Archaeological Museum (finest Roman collection in the world: Pompeii mosaics, Farnese sculptures, secret cabinet of erotic art).

    Afternoon

    Sentier des Dieux

Train to Pompeii (30 min). Walk the streets of a Roman city frozen in time by Vesuvius in 79 AD: the Forum, wealthy villas, amphitheater, and plaster casts of victims.

    Evening

    Dîner chez Da Vincenzo

Return to Naples for pizza at the birthplace of pizza. L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele or Sorbillo — both legendary, both with queues.

  2. Day 2

    Amalfi & Ravello

    Morning

    Cathédrale d'Amalfi

Drive or ferry to Amalfi town. Visit the cathedral (stunning Arab-Norman architecture with a Cloister of Paradise), then explore the narrow alleys climbing up the hillside.

    Afternoon

    Valle delle Ferriere

Bus up to Ravello (350 m above the sea). Visit Villa Rufolo (Wagner's inspiration) and Villa Cimbrone (the "infinity terrace" — the most photographed view on the coast).

    Evening

    Aperitivo sur le port

Dinner in Ravello or Amalfi with sea views. Lemon-based everything: limoncello, lemon pasta, delizia al limone. The Amalfi lemon is a thing of beauty.

  3. Day 3

    Positano

    Morning

    Ferry vers Capri

Visit Positano, the most photogenic village on the coast. Pastel-colored houses cascade down the cliff to a beach where fishermen moor their boats.

    Afternoon

    Jardins d'Auguste & Via Krupp

Beach time at Spiaggia Grande or take a boat to the hidden beach of Fornillo. Rent a boat to explore sea caves and the Li Galli islands (Nureyev's private islands).

    Evening

    Retour & dîner à Positano

Dinner in Positano: Da Vincenzo for refined cuisine, Lo Guarracino for cliff-side dining, or street-side at any of the charming trattorias.

  4. Day 4

    Path of the Gods

    Morning

    Villa Rufolo

Hike the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods): 7.8 km trail along the cliff tops from Bomerano to Nocelle with breathtaking views 500 m above the sea.

    Afternoon

    Villa Cimbrone

From Nocelle, descend 1,700 steps to Positano (or take the local bus). Cool off with a swim and fresh lemon granita on the beach.

    Evening

    Concert au coucher de soleil

Farewell dinner on the coast. The sunset over the Tyrrhenian Sea, with Positano or Praiano glowing in the golden light, is one of Italy's greatest views.

  5. Day 5

    Capri Island

    Morning

    Visite d'une citronnerie

Ferry to Capri. Visit the Blue Grotto (sea cave where sunlight creates an ethereal blue glow), then take the funicular up to Capri Town.

    Afternoon

    Plage de Furore

Explore Capri Town and the Gardens of Augustus (views over the Faraglioni sea stacks). Or hike to Villa Jovis, Emperor Tiberius's clifftop palace.

    Evening

    Cours de cuisine

Aperitivo in the famous Piazzetta (the "living room of the world"), then ferry back to the coast. Or stay overnight to experience Capri without the day-trippers.

  6. Day 6

    Sorrento & Departure

    Morning

    Plage de Fornillo

Visit Sorrento: the dramatic cliff-top town with views of Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. Explore the historic center, lemon groves, and the Marina Grande fishing village.

    Afternoon

    Praiano & tour en bateau

Last shopping: Sorrento inlaid woodwork (intarsia) is a centuries-old craft. Or squeeze in Herculaneum (smaller, better-preserved than Pompeii) en route to Naples.

    Evening

    Dernier dîner panoramique

Transfer to Naples Airport. 6 days of dramatic coastline, ancient ruins, Italian flavors, and that incomparable Mediterranean light.
